Behind the Scenes of “Subterranea”: Likarion Wainaina’s Sci-Fi Series

Behind the Scenes of Subterranea - Likarion Wainaina's Sci-Fi Series

As “Subterranea” continues to capture viewers’ attention with its innovative storyline and unique setting, we take a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of Kenya’s first-ever sci-fi series.

Directed by the multi-award-winning filmmaker Likarion Wainaina, known for his groundbreaking work on “Supa Modo,” delves into new territory with “Subterranea.” This Kenyan film continues to push the boundaries of storytelling.

The Creative Spark

Brian Munene, the show’s creator, shared an incomplete treatment within their production company’s WhatsApp group.

What initially seemed like an intriguing concept soon ignited Wainaina’s excitement. “I was skeptical at first, thinking he might have copied it from elsewhere,” he shares.

However, after confirming with a business partner that it was indeed Munene’s original idea, Wainaina decided to act quickly.

I pitched it to Showmax behind his back because the idea was too good not to pursue.

Navigating Challenges

Developing a sci-fi series in a market unfamiliar with the genre presented several challenges. Wainaina recounts the initial difficulty of convincing Showmax executives that a sci-fi story could resonate with Kenyan audiences.

“We had to illustrate that sci-fi isn’t just Hollywood; it can happen in Kenya and be rooted in our realities,” he explains.

One of the key focuses was creating relatable characters and situations that reflect everyday Kenyan life, ensuring the show would not only entertain but also connect with local viewers.

Building the World of Subterranea

Finding the right location for filming proved to be another major hurdle. After an extensive two-month search, Wainaina’s crew finally secured a studio at M-Net.

However, the space limitations created further challenges, as the studio was too small to accommodate their vision. “We initially needed 13,000 square feet but only had 7,500 square feet to work with,” he elaborates.

Through innovative thinking, the team decided to build a two-story set within the limited area. “While the architect laughed at the idea, we successfully constructed a one-storey set that created the immersive world needed for ‘Subterranea.’”

A Spirit of Experimentation

Wainaina, known for his adventurous approach to filmmaking, thrives in experimenting with genres. “My journey to directing unconventional projects has been intentional,” he asserts.

“I’m excited about where ‘Subterranea’ fits into the larger narrative of Kenyan cinema.” He is eager not only to be a pioneer of new genres but also to motivate other Kenyan storytellers to explore the uncharted territories of filmmaking.

As “Subterranea” unfolds, its behind-the-scenes journey highlights the creativity, resilience, and collaborative spirit that define its production.

The series, now available for streaming on Showmax, continues to pave the way for innovative storytelling in Kenya, inviting audiences to experience a fresh perspective on science fiction that is deeply rooted in local culture.
