Jacaranda Health has completed a six-month Google.org Fellowship program to harness the transformative potential of Generative AI (GenAI) to serve underserved mothers and infants in Kenya.
From April to September, a dedicated team of seven Google.org technical experts worked closely with Jacaranda’s Nairobi-based staff. Their objective was to enhance the personalization and scalability of Jacaranda’s innovative digital health service, PROMPTS.
The platform, integrated within public health systems, empowers new and expecting mothers by providing critical healthcare information via SMS, allowing them to take charge of their health journeys and connect with top-quality care providers.
The partnership has markedly improved how PROMPTS AI interacts with mothers on a large scale. The enhancements include tailored responses based on individual clinical and demographic profiles, along with significant advancements in Jacaranda’s Swahili-speaking Large Language Model.
This refinement enables the system to deliver accurate, real-time responses to mothers, facilitating timely access to healthcare support. Anticipating these upgrades, Jacaranda plans to roll out enhanced personalization features for the PROMPTS platform in the coming months.
H.E. Mutula Kilonzo Junior, Governor of Makueni County and a champion for postpartum hemorrhage, underscored the importance of this collaboration during a recent visit from Google and Jacaranda Health teams to local health facilities.
“Our county spans an impressive 8,300 km² and boasts a high mobile phone penetration rate. By leveraging this mobile technology, we can address pressing maternal health issues, and I firmly support the integration of AI to enhance our healthcare services,” said Kilonzo.
