Safaricom To Introduce M-PESA Junior Account For Age Of 10 To 18 Years

Safaricom on Tuesday announced that it will introduce M-PESA Junior Account for young Kenyans between the age of 10 to 18 years.

Peter Ndegwa, Safaricom CEO made the announcement during the unveiling of “Tuinuane” brand campaign that is aimed at encouraging Kenyans to uplift one another.

The telecommunications firm indicated that children can also have SIM cards too, but they have to be registered using their parents’ or guardians’ identification documents.

“In the coming weeks and months, we will announce more propositions and initiatives in line with our Tuinuane spirit. This includes the M-PESA Junior Account for young Kenyans between the age of 10 to 18 years as well as our mobile-based investment solution that will allow M-PESA users to invest and earn interest”, added Mr Ndegwa.

Safaricom intends to empower communities through the Tuinuane campaign. The firm said they will give students easy and simple access to learning materials, and unveil innovative products and services that give customers value for money.

“Tuinuane is borrowed from the spirit of generosity that Kenyans are well known for. The Tuinuane spirit is about all of us having a renewed sense of inspiration to do what is right by uplifting others, especially during these trying times. For Safaricom, the Tuinuane spirit is our way of saying that we want to work with Kenyans to help them meet their dreams and aspirations”. said Peter Ndegwa, CEO, Safaricom PLC.

Under the campaign, Safaricom Foundation’s Ndoto Zetu initiative will drive Safaricom’s engagement with the community. Since its inception in 2019, Ndoto Zetu has reached close to 3 million Kenyans. This year, the Safaricom Foundation aims to reach a further 2 million people with projects worth 100 million shillings.

Kenyans wishing to fulfil their community dreams can send a written submission through the website  https://www.safaricomfoundation.org/ndotozetu/  or visit any Safaricom Retail Shop and fill in an application form for a chance to have their community dream realized.

Under education, Safaricom has partnered with content providers to enable access to relevant and affordable content in a simple and easy manner. These propositions include Shupavu 291, which can be delivered via SMS for just 4 shillings per day, and the web-based Safaricom elimu, which can be accessed with 200mbs of data for just 20 shillings.

Safaricom also introduced Tuinuane Bundles, which will see customers get special offers on data, calls and SMS for just 20 shillings. These offers include 1GB data valid for one-hour, unlimited calls valid for an hour or unlimited text messages valid for 24 hours. The offers will be available via mySafaricom app or by dialling *444*22#.

Safaricom has also encouraged Kenyans to utilise their Bonga Points to uplift themselves or lift others by using them to buy food or other essential items.
