Netflix launches free mobile plan in Kenya

Netflix has launched a new free mobile plan in Kenya allowing users to watch a limited selection of its catalog, including full seasons of select shows.

The new free offer allows Kenyans on Android devices to watch Netflix for as long as they want without paying a subscription fee.

Netflix unlocked its service in Kenya in a move that seeks to woo new subscribers. The streaming company said it hopes that users who enjoy using the service will eventually upgrade to one of its paid subscriptions, which support streaming from TVs and laptops as well.

Cathy Conk, Netflix’s Director of Product Innovation said the free plan will allow people in Kenya to access most of Netflix’s shows and films ads-free with personalized recommendations and parental controls.

“At Netflix, we want everyone to be able to enjoy the suspense of Blood & Water, the romance of Bridgerton, and the adventure of Army of the Dead. Now we’re giving audiences in Kenya the chance to experience these stories for themselves — completely free of charge, ” she said.

Users 18 years or older in Kenya can enrol in the free plan and can be able to create up to five profiles. No payment information will be required.

Some functions, such as the ability to download a show or movie, will not be available under the free plan.
